Title:

A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Punta Gorda, Florida, as local host agency for the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program, authorizing the City Manager to sign the grant agreement and administer the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Coastal Partnership Initiative Citizen Seagrass Gardening Grant on behalf of the City; appropriating the grant award; and providing an effective date.

Funds:

CHNEP requested and was awarded $14,270.00;  funds originated from NOAA and are being passed through FDEP; the required in-kind match to be provided by CHNEP and project partners, no City funds to be expended.

Recommended Action: Staff recommends approval.
Summary:

The Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program (CHNEP), hosted by the City of Punta Gorda, in partnership with the Calusa Waterkeeper (formerly known as the Caloosahatchee River Citizens Association or Riverwatch) is proposing to restore Tape Grass and Ruppia grass in the tidal Caloosahatchee River by establishing seed-source colonies protected from herbivores. Volunteers will be recruited by the CHNEP and Calusa Waterkeeper to plant and monitor the seagrass.  CHNEP will coordinate with the Calusa Waterkeeper to create transferable restoration monitoring procedures. CHNEP has been awarded funds by FDEP to conduct the project.
